Terminals : understanding the technical characteristics
The protection index
Often, suppliers of industrial terminals ensure that their equipment is resistant to dust and liquids. Their level of resistance is defined by what is called the IP protection index followed by 2 numbers:
- The degree of protection against solid foreign objects – dust (first number)
- The degree of protection against liquids (second number).
These are defined by the following table:

Example: IP65 protection corresponds to protection against dust and water jets.
Characteristics of a touch panel
There are 2 types of screens :
- Capacitive touch screen: usable with direct skin contact (or with a specific stylus), not usable with tools.
- Resistive touch screen: usable with any type of physical contact, such as finger, glove.
VESA mounting ?
VESA stands for Video Electronics Standards Association. VESA is a universal size that is used by most manufacturers. The VESA interface standard is the distance between the four mounting holes on the back of a display (displayed as “horizontal distance x vertical distance”). This VESA standard is used for mounting displays on a wall mount or stand. This standard ensures compatibility between a screen and any mounting system (such as an articulated arm widely used in shop floor).
For example, a terminal with a VESA 75 system will be compatible with all VESA 75 mounting systems.
